Every construction project — whether a two-storey home or a commercial complex — rests on the same core set of materials. Understanding what each one does, and what quality looks like, is the first step toward building something that lasts.

1. TMT Bars

TMT bars provide the tensile strength that concrete lacks. For residential projects, Fe500D from a reputed mill is the standard. Always check for IS 1786 markings, the manufacturer's logo, and the grade rolled onto the bar itself. Never accept plain, unmarked steel — it is almost always substandard.

2. Cement

Cement is the glue of your building. PPC is ideal for foundations and slabs; OPC 43 or 53 is used where quick strength gain is needed. Only buy cement produced within the last 45 days, and store bags on wooden pallets away from walls to prevent moisture absorption.

3. Bricks

Traditional red clay bricks are still the most common walling material in India. A good brick rings clearly when struck, absorbs less than 20% of its weight in water, and doesn't crumble under a fingernail. Class 1 bricks are the standard for load-bearing walls; lower classes are only suitable for internal partitions.

4. Fly Ash Blocks

Fly ash blocks are a modern alternative to clay bricks. They are lighter, more uniform in size, and provide better thermal insulation. Because they are larger than bricks, they build walls faster and reduce mortar consumption. They're the smart choice for eco-conscious builders.

5. MS Pipes

Mild steel pipes are used for railings, gates, water lines, and structural frameworks. Look for pipes conforming to IS 1239 for general purposes and IS 3589 for larger diameter structural pipes. The wall thickness and finish quality vary widely — cheap pipes may look identical but fail in a fraction of the expected life.

6. Angles

MS angles are L-shaped structural steel sections used in trusses, gates, grills, and frames. They come in equal and unequal leg configurations and are specified by leg length and thickness. For any structural application, only use angles that meet IS 2062 standards.

7. Flat Patti

Flat patti — flat steel strips — are the workhorse of fabrication. They're used for grills, brackets, reinforcement, and countless custom applications. They should be straight, uniform in thickness, and free of pitting or scale.
